Everyone Has Their Own Start Line

Hello, I’m Jack.

If you don’t know, I used to run around in circles, and sometimes jump over things.

It turned out I was quite good at it. Good enough that I ended up doing it for my country. I represented Great Britain at two Olympic Games in the 400m hurdles and 400m relay. But behind the medals and moments of glory, I was battling something far bigger—my own mind.

I struggled with my mental health throughout my career, eventually being diagnosed with depression and anxiety. That led me to take a two-year break from the sport and, ultimately, retire early at 28, right at my physical peak.

That could have been the end of my story. But instead, it became the start of something bigger. Therapy, a return to sport, my work in mental health and workplace wellbeing, changed my perspective completely. And through it all, I realised that my real passion isn’t just competing, it’s coaching. It’s helping others perform at their best, in sport and in life.

Why This Newsletter?

This newsletter is about mindset, wellbeing, and performance. I’ll share practical insights from my experience as an elite athlete, coach, and former wellbeing lead. Lessons that apply whether you’re stepping onto an Olympic track, into the workplace, or into a new phase of life.

Because here’s the truth: everyone has their own start line.

Wherever that start line is, the pressures, anxieties, and challenges will find you there. And how you prepare for that moment makes all the difference.

What to Expect

Each edition of this newsletter will explore a key idea around performance, wellbeing, and mindset. I’ll share:

  • Lessons from sport - what works, what doesn’t, and how elite athletes perform on the biggest stages.

  • Practical strategies - lessons and tips that you can apply to your own challenges.

  • Personal insights - the experiences that shaped me, shared as unfiltered and human as possible.

If that sounds useful, stick around. I’ll keep it clear, to the point, and most importantly, actionable.

Your next start line is coming, whether you know it or not. Let’s make sure you’re ready.

See you next time,
Jack
